Sleeping on your back can cause a major obstruction in the airway which may then lead to further snoring. Once you have this down, I would also recommend trying to drink some sort of fluid before bed to ensure moistness in your throat which should reduce vibration. These three remedies (device, side, and moisture) are three of the more natural ways to go about nipping snoring in the bud. Outside of that you may be interested in trying to lose a few pounds, or even going to see your doctor to discuss the possibility of stop snoring surgery.

Regardless of which of the above methods you decide to chose, I surely wish you the best of luck in all of your stop snoring endeavors. It doesent have to be a long and hard road, though it can be if you decide to sway away from the beaten path.

Using a Device to Stop Snoring

The sounds a snorer can make at night, may seem rather obscene to some, and minor to others. The fact of the matter however is that those sounds may lead to health problems, and in some cases will cause an unpleasant night for your partner or roommate. So with that being said, what is a snorer to do of this problem before it becomes to much to handle? Well for one thing you may want to try out a device to stop snoring. This blog is actually entirely about these little devices, which work in a way which allows for the vast reduction, or even elimination of snoring in some cases. Surely you realize that I am no medical physician, so my statements here as not documented, and should not be taken as gospel, but the fact remains, these devices have been shown to work in many cases.

Some stop snoring devices are built to move your jaw a bit forward while you sleep at night. This is meant to reduce your snoring and although you may have to wear a mask of some sort to make this happen, it may be worth it. Other devices are snoreless pillows and such which allow for a similar reduction, although may not be as effective as the mask considering that nothing is actually forcing your head into a certain position.

Every person is obviously different, and so to think that one device would work for each person is kind of absurd. However if you are able to do a split test of sorts, where you test certain devices against others you may be able to come across some pretty staggering results. This is my advice to you at least, and I wish you the best with whatever you decide. I for one plan on ordering the mask to start out, in order to see how well it fares, and then trying out a new pillow after that is done. I may not be an expert on how to stop snoring, but I am sure I can figure out a well to make it go away within time.

Do You Need Surgery to Stop Snoring?

I will give you the short answer, NO. Now I will delve into a bit of writing in hopes of explaining exactly why you do not need surgery to stop snoring. You see these days more than ever people are looking at surgery to save them from all things bad. Liposuction, botox, stop snoring surgery etc. have all become so American mainstream so we actually tend to believe that they are good for us. The fact of the matter however is the fact that snoring is absolutely curable naturally, and surgery is not a healthy way to stop yourself from snoring in the long term.

So now that you realize the surgery to stop snoring solution is not what you thought it might be what else can you do to stop yourself from snoring? Well in a previous post about dealing with snoring I mentioned a two phase process that has seemed to work for other people around the world. The first phase of the process is to try and lose some weight, do not drink alcohol to excess before bed, and lastly drink some fluids before bed. For the full explanation of these, check out the previous post that I wrote.

Once you have gotten the first phase of the process down pat you can then look into purchasing any one of the many stop snoring devices that are available on the market today. I have not tried most of them but I have heard more than positive things about them in the past so its something that you may want to check out. Once you have your device, I cannot guarantee that you will never snore ever again, but the device is designed to keep you from snoring and from what I have heard it does a pretty damn good job of accomplishing just that.

My advice to readers has been and always will be to try out different things on your own to see what really works for you. Though I stand by the fact that you do not need surgery to stop snoring, rather you need a little bit of commitment and a device that can help you along the way.

Dealing with Snoring

These days more than ever people are suffering from snoring for a variety of reasons ranging from obesity, to genetics, to poor sleeping habits. Unfortunately their is no tried and true way to pin point such information, but regardless of why people have been snoring as of late, the fact of the matter remains you can stop snoring if you try. The consensus amongst the people that I have spoken with in the past is that you will be able to stop snoring if you follow a two step process.

The first step in the stop snoring process is to ensure that you are not drinking alcohol before bed, you should try and lose a few pounds, and you should drink juice or water before bed. Not drinking juice or water can cause your mouth to become dry which could cause an increase in vibration, which would then cause snoring as we know it. In terms of losing some weight and not drinking alcohol before bed, the opposite of those suggestions is believed to cause snoring in many people. The second phase of this process is to purchase a stop snoring device. Stop snoring devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, they also range in price from just a few dollars up to a few hundred dollars. Though when looking to purchase one my only advice would be “You get what you pay for” if you skimp out, you may get mixed results, whereas if you buy a proven product you may have better success. Its all up to you really, and I have no interest in swaying you one way or the other.

So now that you know the way to go about keeping yourself from snoring, and realize what type of snoring solutions are available to you. I would personally try out a variety of different things over time and do your own form of experimentation. What you find with your testing may be different from what I have found in mine, and what others have found in theirs. Up to this point this has not been an exact science and should not be treated as such.

Best of Luck to you in your stop snoring endeavors!

Why do People Snore?

Many people are frustrated and inflicted with the annoying problem of snoring. But, why do people snore?

The sounds that are associated with snoring occur because there are portions in the rear of the oral cavity which relax during sleep. When these portions are overly relaxed, the air that is breathed will cause them to vibrate, as they are hanging closer to the throat. This is what causes the sounds associated with snoring.

Those who are inflicted with the problem of snoring usually have one or more of the following associated problems:

Excess Flesh In The Throat – If the throat contains to much flesh in its makeup, the more likely a person will snore. Why do people snore when they have oversized tonsils and/or adenoids? This is precisely why. Also, those who are overweight will have larger neck cavities which have narrower windpipes. This only adds to the blockages caused by excess fleshy tissue in the throat. While it is less common, polyps, throat cysts, and cancerous tissues can also cause snoring to occur. Other people have an elongated uvula and softer palate than others. These will flutter while a person breathes as they are sleeping, blocking the normal passage of air, and causing the sounds of snoring. In order to correct this problem, there are some surgical procedures available that can remove excess flesh that is causing the problem.

Nasal Blockages – If a person’s nose is stopped up or congested, this will cause him or her to breathe in more deeply, creating a type of vacuum in the throat cavity. Any dangling tissues in the throat which are subject to this will be caused to flutter. Why do people snore only sometimes? During the height of allergy seasons, people will tend to snore more than they normally would – if at all – due to nasal blockages. This is why many people say that they only snore if they are suffering from the common cold.

Nose Structure – The septum, located in the nose, acts as a bridge that keeps the nostrils separate from one another. If there are any deformities in this area, this can cause blockages while breathing, causing snoring to occur. These problems are the most difficult to correct, as many surgeries available fall under the cosmetic category. However, there are many stop snoring aids which help alter the size of the nostrils through the use of nasal strips.

Breathing Through The Mouth – When the jaws of the mouth are lowered while sleeping, a cavity is widened which causes the tongue to rear itself further back in the throat. This will obstruct the proper air flow, causing a fluttering, snoring sound. This is a bit more difficult to correct, as it is necessary for the person to change from breathing through the mouth to breathing through the nose; however, there are now exercises you can use to “train” yourself to make these necessary changes.

Causes of Snoring

What causes snoring? Before that question can be answered we need to know what snoring is. Snoring is the vibration of tissue in your throat, caused by air flow from your nose or mouth going to your lungs. You yourself might not realize that you snore but your bed partner might if it is loud enough. Snoring is not a gender specific occurrence, although it has been shown that more men than women do snore. Snoring can also be a short term occurrence caused by a temporary condition in someone’s life such a going to a party and consuming a little too much alcohol or having a cold or other illness. Snoring tends to get worse as a person ages.

When we breathe air flows through the nose or mouth to the lungs and when we are awake and sitting upright there is no noise just the sound of steady normal breathing. When we sleep and are in a prone position this sometimes causes the airway to narrow. When this happens the opening is smaller causing a greater amount of vibration which produces the sound of snoring.

Breathing through our nose is best because the nose acts as a heater, filter and humidifier for air that is entering our bodies. When breathing through the mouth the air is not filtered or warmed. Breathing through the nose is the way the body was intended to take in air because it does treat the air entering the body by removing dust and dirt particles, warming it and adding a bit of moisture to it.

Some people can not breathe through their noses due obstructions in the nasal passages such as a deviated septum. The septum is the thin wall of cartilage that separates the two air passages that are known to most as the nostrils. A deviation can be caused to the septum by the nose being broken or it did not form correctly to begin with causing an obstruction. Some other causes of obstructions can be due to colds or allergies causing tissue swelling and the nasal passages to become narrower. People with these problems are sometimes called mouth breathers. Breathing through the mouth allows a greater amount of air to be inhaled allowing a greater chance of vibration and snoring to occur.

Narrowed air ways can lead to snoring. The airway can become narrowed by the tonsils, when they become inflamed due to the body fighting infection. The soft palate may be too large or floppy causing the airway to become narrow. The uvula, is the flap of skin that hangs from the back of the throat at the soft palate, it may be abnormally long or thick making the airway narrower. If the tongue is large or slips back to obstruct the airway this too can cause snoring.

REM sleep is when most snoring can occur because the brain sends a message to all the muscles to relax except the breathing muscles. If you are sleeping on your back when this relaxation happens gravity also comes into play pulling the relaxed tongue, palate and throat downward causing the airway to narrow making snoring worse. So your sleep position can play into the snoring.

Alcohol and medication can enhance the relaxation of the muscles during sleep and once again narrowing the air passage and creating the vibrations that causes snoring.

Snoring can also be a sign of a condition called Sleep Apnea or another sleeping disorder. The snoring may need to be evaluated to make sure that this is not the case.
